San Valentino

Celebrate St Valentine’s Day at La Locanda. The celebration of San Valentino is in recognition of the romance associated with Italian culture. This dates back to the third century AD, when Roman Emperor Claudius II banned young men from marrying, claiming single men made better soldiers.

Valentine, a young priest, defied the unjust law and presided over secret marriages for young lovers, an act for which he was imprisoned and sentenced to death. He befriended one of his jailers, whose daughter was blind – and, in an act recognised as a miracle, Valentine restored her sight.

Prior to his execution on 14 February, 270AD, the priest wrote a letter to the jailer and his daughter, expressing his regard and signing it, “Your Valentine”. This has evolved into today’s tradition of celebrating love and romance on 14 February each year.
